The short answer

Many tourists can visit Japan visa-free for a short stay, but eligibility depends on the passport itself, not where you live or depart from. Visit Japan Web is a free official service for immigration and customs procedures; it makes arrival easier but does not grant a visa. Check the Foreign Ministry’s current list for your nationality and review medication rules before flying.

Japan’s arrival process is straightforward once three separate things are kept separate: permission to travel, arrival forms, and customs rules. A Visit Japan Web QR code only addresses the second. It cannot fix a passport that requires a visa or make a prohibited medicine legal.

This guide was checked against Japanese government sources on July 13, 2026. Entry rules can change, so use the official links at the end for the final decision.

The five-minute entry check

Question Where to confirm it Do this before departure
Does my passport need a visa? Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Check the exact nationality and passport conditions
Is my passport valid for the trip? Your airline plus Japanese embassy/consulate guidance Travel with enough validity for the planned stay and airline requirements
Can I complete arrival details online? Official Visit Japan Web Create the free account and save the QR code
Can I bring this medicine or food? Health Ministry and Japan Customs Check the active ingredient and quantity, not just the brand
Is my onward journey credible? Airline and immigration requirements Keep onward booking and accommodation details accessible

Do not rely on a social post that says “no visa needed for Japan” without naming a passport. Rules for an American, Indonesian and Indian passport holder are not the same, even if all three live in the same country.

Who can enter Japan without a visa?

MOFA maintains the authoritative visa-exemption list. At the time of this review, it listed 74 countries and regions, with most eligible visitors receiving a period of stay of up to 90 days. Some nationalities have shorter limits or special ePassport, registration or passport-note conditions.

That headline number is not a shortcut. Read every note beside your nationality. For example, exemptions can depend on an ICAO-compliant ePassport, a personal ID number or prior registration. A residence permit in a visa-exempt country generally does not turn a different passport into a visa-exempt one.

Visa-free entry is normally for a temporary visit, not paid work. Immigration decides the period actually granted when you land. If your nationality is absent, or your purpose falls outside ordinary tourism, use MOFA’s visa guidance and the Japanese embassy or consulate serving your place of residence.

Japan also operates an official eVISA system for eligible applicants in specified countries or regions of residence. “Electronic” does not mean instant or universal. Start with MOFA, not a sponsored search result or paid form-filling site.

Passport validity: avoid the six-month myth

Japan does not publish one universal tourist rule stating that every passport must have six months remaining. The practical requirement is a passport valid for the stay, subject to the traveler’s nationality and carrier rules. Airlines and transit countries may impose their own document checks.

The safe approach is not to debate the rule at check-in. If a passport is close to expiry, confirm with the airline and the relevant Japanese diplomatic mission, and renew if the margin is uncomfortable. Check that the name on the ticket matches the passport and that the document is undamaged.

Carry access to:

  • an onward or return booking;
  • the first accommodation address and phone number;
  • travel dates and a plausible tourism plan;
  • any visa or eVISA confirmation that applies;
  • medication permissions or import confirmation, when required.

What Visit Japan Web actually does

Visit Japan Web is the Japanese Digital Agency’s free browser-based service. It lets travelers enter information for immigration clearance and customs declaration, then display the relevant QR code during arrival. It also supports information used for Japan’s tax-free shopping service.

It is a website, not a paid app and not a visa application. Japan Customs issued a 2026 warning about fake websites and third parties charging for arrival declarations. Use the digital.go.jp service page or follow its link to the official system.

How to complete it

  1. Create an account with an email address on the official Visit Japan Web site.
  2. Register the traveler information exactly as shown in the passport.
  3. Add the planned arrival, flight and accommodation information.
  4. Complete the immigration and customs sections shown for that trip.
  5. Display the QR code after registration and save an offline screenshot as backup.
  6. Keep the passport available; the QR code does not replace it.

Complete this before leaving home, when the booking details and reliable internet are available. You can update ordinary trip details if the system permits, but a last-minute airport rush is where travelers end up on lookalike sites.

Is Visit Japan Web mandatory?

The online service is not the legal basis for entry and it does not replace a visa. Japan Customs says all arriving passengers must declare their belongings and recommends electronic declaration through Visit Japan Web; declaration forms are also available for the non-electronic process. Using the official service is the lowest-friction default for most visitors.

If a QR code will not load, ask arrival staff rather than paying a helper. Keep the trip details and customs answers available so the process can be completed by the method offered at the airport.

What happens when you land?

The exact layout varies, but the sequence is normally:

  1. Quarantine or health instructions, if any are active.
  2. Immigration, where the passport and arrival information are processed.
  3. Baggage claim for checked luggage.
  4. Customs declaration and inspection channel.
  5. Arrivals hall, where transport, ATMs and service counters are located.

Do not promise yourself a 30-minute airport exit before a fixed train. Several international flights can reach immigration together, and a baggage or document question adds time. Our Japan airport transfer guide explains Narita, Haneda and Kansai options, including late arrivals.

Customs: everyone makes a declaration

Japan Customs requires arriving passengers to declare belongings. Honest declaration is more important than guessing which lane looks faster.

Common categories needing attention include:

  • meat products, plants, fruit and other agricultural items;
  • large amounts of currency or equivalent means of payment;
  • goods over duty-free allowances;
  • commercial quantities or items for resale;
  • unaccompanied baggage arriving separately;
  • medicines, controlled substances and some medical devices.

“Packaged” does not automatically mean an animal or plant product is allowed. If a snack contains meat, or you are unsure about fresh food, check the official animal and plant quarantine guidance and declare it. Disposal at the border is cheaper than a serious customs problem.

Bringing medication into Japan

Japan regulates the active ingredient, quantity and drug category. A medicine that is routine at home can be controlled or prohibited in Japan, and two products with similar brand names can contain different ingredients.

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare says that ordinary personal-use quantities within specified limits may enter without Import Confirmation. Its current guidance includes up to a one-month supply for prescription drugs and up to two months for many other drugs, but controlled substances follow different rules. Medicines categorized as narcotics or stimulant raw materials require advance government permission even when prescribed, and some stimulant substances cannot be brought in at all.

Use this process:

  1. List the generic name, active ingredient, strength, dose and total quantity.
  2. Check each ingredient against the Health Ministry and Narcotics Control guidance.
  3. Apply for Import Confirmation or advance permission when the official rule says it is required.
  4. Carry medicine in labeled packaging with the prescription or clinician letter.
  5. Keep essential medicine in hand luggage within airline security rules.

Do not use a forum reply about someone else’s ADHD, cold or pain medicine as your legal clearance. The ingredient and amount decide the answer.

Separate tickets and airside transit

An international-to-international connection that remains airside may not involve formal entry, but the airline and airport determine the transfer process. If you must collect baggage, change airports, check in on a separate ticket or leave the secure area, you need full permission to enter Japan.

Ask the first airline whether baggage is tagged to the final destination and whether you will receive the onward boarding pass. A “Tokyo connection” between Narita and Haneda is not airside: the airports are far apart and the traveler must enter Japan.

Departure and re-entry details

Keep the immigration permission and passport secure throughout the stay. A short trip from Japan to Korea or another country ends that entry; returning requires a new admissibility check. Do not assume a single-entry visa permits another arrival.

Leave time at the departure airport for tax-free goods questions, baggage and security. Rules on carrying liquids, batteries and purchases are separate from immigration permission.

Arrival checklist

  • Check the current MOFA visa-exemption list for the exact passport.
  • Read every nationality-specific footnote.
  • Use the official eVISA route if a visa is required and you are eligible.
  • Complete Visit Japan Web on the official free site.
  • Save the QR code and first hotel address offline.
  • Confirm every medication by active ingredient and quantity.
  • Declare uncertain food, medicine, cash or goods.
  • Keep onward travel and accommodation bookings accessible.
  • Leave a generous arrival buffer before long-distance transport.

FAQ

Do I need a visa to visit Japan?

It depends on your passport, purpose and intended stay. Check MOFA’s current visa- exemption list and its footnotes; residence in a visa-exempt country is not enough if the passport nationality has different rules.

Is Visit Japan Web mandatory?

Visit Japan Web is the official free digital route for arrival procedures, not a visa. Japan Customs requires a declaration and recommends the electronic service, while forms are available for the alternative process. Using it in advance is the easiest default.

Does Visit Japan Web cost money?

No. The Digital Agency service and electronic customs declaration are free. Avoid lookalike sites and third parties charging to create arrival QR codes.

Does my passport need six months of validity for Japan?

Japan does not state one universal six-month tourist rule for all passports. The document must cover the stay, and airlines or transit countries may have additional requirements. Confirm before travel if validity is short.

Can I bring prescription medicine to Japan?

Often yes, but ingredient, category and quantity matter. Check the Health Ministry’s current limits and controlled-substance rules; obtain Import Confirmation or advance permission when required.
